Etymology

Maroon is derived from French marron ("chestnut").^[2]

The first recorded use of maroon as a color name in English was in 1789.^[3]

Maroon in human culture

Business

• Maroon is the main color of the Hollister Co. logo.
• Maroon was the livery applied to coaching stock of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (1923–1947), and to much of that of British Railways in the period 1956–1965.
• Maroon is a favorite epithet used by the Looney Tunes cartoon character Bugs Bunny towards another character who is particularly slow to grasp a simple concept or who is easily fooled. It is said to be a mispronunciation of the word Moron. ^[4]

Military

• The distinctive maroon beret has been worn by airborne forces the world over since 1942.^[5]

Religion

• Vajrayana Buddhist monks, such as the Dalai Lama, wear maroon robes.^[6]
• Theravada Buddhist monks usually wear saffron robes, but may occasionally wear maroon robes.
• Maroon is also worn in the Philippines by Catholic devotees of the Black Nazarene during its procession on 9 January.

Vexillology (The study of Flags)

• Maroon and white are the colors of the Flag of Latvia and the Flag of Qatar.

Other

• Maroon and white are the official school colors of the University of Chicago. Although the school's mascot is a phoenix, its sports teams are nicknamed "The Maroons."
